The Lake

My final clip came on the walk back when I wasn't even planning on recording anything. While walking near the lake I realized what a great sound the waves made as they crashed along the shore. I stopped for a moment and recorded just off the sidewalk. In this clip, you can hear a runner and biker passing by.

Wind Chimes

My personal favorite recording came about a couple blocks away from the pinwheels. Outside of an apartment, there were two wind chimes hanging on a tree. One was much smaller than the other so they each produced very different sounds. This recording captures the chimes as a truck passes by.

American Pinwheels

On my first failed attempt at a soundwalk, I walked by a pinwheel and thought "If this were a windier day, that could sound great." This time, the wind was perfect. Not so strong as too interfere with the sound, but strong enough to get the pinwheels going. These pinwheels were located outside the Obama campaign office on Downer.

Bobcat

Not far away from where I got the first recording was a great subject for another. A bobcat was lifting up a pile of gravel, and then dumping it back down right where it picked it up. It did this twice, then drove away. I'm not sure quite what the point of doing that was, but who can really understand the complex planning that goes into road repair.

Road Work

Pretty much right away I came upon a big opportunity for good recordings: the construction on Locust. This first recording is just of a few workers moving around the construction area. I'm honestly not sure what all the noises are exactly (you can hear a car door slam, what sounds like a shovel, etc) but I like the way they sound.

Drift Strategy and Map

I had a very simple strategy: At every intersection, I would flip a coin. Heads meant I went forward, tails meant I flipped again. Heads on the second flip would have me going left, while tails had me go right. This strategy worked out pretty well, though I sort of went in a circle a couple times. At the end (going along Lake Dr) I had to get back quick, so I just went straight down Lake. I only included that part because I did get one recording on the way back.

And here's the map:

Problems

So I had some problems with my first couple soundwalks... My first resulted in my minidisc recorder falling into Lake Michigan, and my second finished with me pressing "Stop" then getting "Rec Error" and losing everything. So because of all that, everything's been a little delayed, but I should have some stuff up either later today or tomorrow.
